Cylinders: aluminum alloy with hardened steel liners

Crankshaft:hardened steel, built-up in situ

Engine mount:stainless steel

Ignition system:Becker (Germany)

Starter motor:with planetary reduction and Bendix drive

Fuel:gasoline with 2% oil

Weight (approx.):1600 grams

Important information

The engine is bench run for about 20 minutes with preliminary settings of ignition and carburetor.  Best results, however, are obtained after more running time with improved piston ring seal and compression.

Do not use the starter motor before the engine is run in – unless it starts right away. (The planetary gears in the starter motor do not like prolonged running.)

Adjust the valves after approx. 2 hours of running. Correct clearance is 0.05 mm. (Be careful when tightening the lock nuts!)

Mounting the engine

Make spacers out of a good grade of aluminum alloy for use between the engine mount and the bulkhead (normally around 20 to 25 mm long), threaded M4 (or nearest inch thread) throughout in the hole;

The engine should be mounted “inverted” (with the camshaft and carburetor downwards).

The leads from the sensors to the ignition module should be routed in a loop downwards so that they can move freely. (X-marked leads and X-marked contacts go together.)

Settings

Carburetor:

The Perry carburetor has been modified for improved mid-range mixture control and with air bleed control for a low and reliable idling speed.

Start the adjustments with fully open throttle and the needle approx. half a turn open. If the speed increases when the fuel line is pinched, close the needle.

Best setting for around half throttle is obtained by trying different positions of the “mixture disk” close to the carburetor body. (The same pinching trick can be use here. For a leaner mixture, turn the disk clockwise.)

Best setting for idle is obtained by means of the “air screw”.

Ignition:

Trigger point a full speed: approx. 3 mm before top dead center

At idle: approx. 0.5 mm after top dead center.

Miscellaneous

The engine is supplied with:

•bracket for radial mounting (in place)

•fuel lines out of Viton (black), 4 x 2 (outer dia x inner dia) for connection between tank and carburetor and 6 x 4 for the breather line from crankcase and cam housing;

•Starter motor Graupner 480, 7.2 V, with  planetary reduction gears;

•Shaft coupling parts (4 pieces, with elastic members, for the starter motor );

•Ignition system: Becker Za 41;

•Exhaust pipes (4 pieces extra);

•Drawing and drill jig for mounting holes;

•Tools for metric insex screws.

Not supplied:

•Power supply for the ignition system. A NiMH 1,900 mAh, 4.8 V, 4-cell pack is recommended.

•Power supply for the starter motor. As the motor can draw up to 30 Amp, the power pack must be able to deliver that current during a short time. A NiCad 1,900 mAh, 7.2 V, 6-cell pack will work.

Viktig information
